As a speech therapist working in special schools in the late 1980's, I found that there were lots of kids with a diagnosis of "Mental Retardation", who were not fitting in this category at all. They were different in many aspects, but the common thread was that they all had difficulty with communication and socialization. Since diagnostic facilities were quite poor in those days, most of these kids had only had standard IQ tests done. These had typically revealed very poor verbal IQ and also a poor non-verbal IQ, as receptive language quite poor for most of these kids. And hence the diagnosis of mental retardation.
