Katie Higgins

Katie Higgins graduated with a Masters in Speech and Language Therapy from the University of Limerick. She has gained clinical experience in a variety of settings including an acute hospital, rehabilitation unit, H.S.E. centres and nursing homes, and a school setting. She has gained a wide range of experience working with adults, adolescents and children with diverse communication and swallowing difficulties. These include aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysarthria, cognitive impairment, voice disorders, speech and language delays, social skills, use of alternative and augmentative communication and swallowing disorders. She has experience working with clients including those post stroke, post glossectomy, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neuron Disease, dementia, autistic spectrum disorder and intellectual disabilities.<br /> Katie completed research relating to the use of conventional and alternative therapies for children with Autism, which she presented at the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists’ Conference in 2011. In continuing her professional development as a Speech and Language Therapist, Katie has attended courses pertaining to her field. These include Module 1 Lámh, Level 1 Irish Sign Language and a Tracheotomy Safety Pathway study day. Katie is a member of the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists. She is dysphagia qualified and is also a member of the Dysphagia Special Interest Group.
