Julia Howard
Julia is an Occupational Therapist who is very passionate about working with pre-school children with additional or special needs.<br /> <br /> After completing her OT training in Cape Town, Julia left for the UK to broaden her work horizons and travel. During this time Julia worked at The Children’s Trust in Tadworth, Surrey which is a specialist centre for children with acquired brain injury and neurological disability. This gave Julia invaluable training and experience in this field as well as instilling a passion for working with children with special needs and their families. During this period Julia met her husband and later moved to Staffordshire after which she worked for 5 years as a Community Paediatric OT providing therapy for children within their homes, schools or nurseries. As part of her role Julia provided individual therapy; ran therapy groups; trained caregivers and teachers and prescribed specialist equipment to support children with disabilities to participate fully within their homes and communities and to integrate within the school environment.<br /> <br /> On return to South Africa, Julia worked in Private Practice as well as at a special school. Julia noticed that there was a need for a service that would provide babies and toddlers with special needs with an opportunity to interact with their peers, to play and to learn. In essence a play group that can accommodate their needs, that can facilitate their development and allow them to practice the skills they are working on in individual therapy sessions. It was also felt that this group could provide a space for parents and carers to have the opportunity to chat to and support one another. Julia is delighted to launch Lighthouse Kids – a developmental stimulation mom and baby/mom and toddler group for children with special needs.<br /> <br /> Julia is a mother to two young children and loves spending time with her family and friends.
