Joseph Nyland

Joseph graduated with a BSc Honours degree in Speech and Language Therapy from University College Cork. He has worked with both children and adults with a variety of speech, language and swallowing difficulties, including phonological delay/disorder, language delay/ disorder, developmental language disorder, stammering, dysarthria, aphasia, dysphagia, dysphonia, stroke and progressive neurological conditions such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease. <br /> He has gained experience working in a number of different settings including paediatric and mixed paediatric/ adult community care, adult acute care, and services for adults with acquired brain injuries. He has also taken part in the Communication Partner Scheme for adults with aphasia and other acquired communication difficulties, and has completed the Lámh Module 1 course.<br /> Joseph has a strong research background. In 2016, he was awarded a Scholarship by the Health Research Board to conduct a quantitative research project. In this project, Joseph adapted a computerised assessment of speech prosody, the Profiling Elements of Prosody of Speech Communication (PEPS-C) 2015, for assessing and diagnosing speech prosody disorders in an Irish-English speaking population. He used the new version of the assessment, the PEPS-C (2015) IE, to examine the speech prosody abilities of typical speakers of Irish-English and individuals learning English as a second language in Ireland. Joseph then went on to use the PEPS-C (2015) IE to investigate the speech prosody abilities of adults with Down syndrome.<br /> Joseph is a member of Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists and is a registered member of CORU. He is eager to continue to develop his professional profile as a member of The Speech Centre team through continuing professional development and the provision of individualised, holistic intervention to clients.
