Emma graduated with a BSc Honours degree in Speech and Language Therapy from University College Cork. She has experience in a variety of different clinical settings including community care clinics, early intervention, nursing homes, acute hospitals, centres for adults with acquired communication difficulties and paediatric acute care. She has worked with people of all ages with a variety of communication and swallowing difficulties, including developmental speech and language delays and disorders, voice disorders, intellectual disabilities, social impairments, dyspraxia, aphasia, dysarthria and swallowing disorders. She also has experience working with people with autism spectrum disorder, hearing loss, cleft lip/palate, ADHD, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, MND, MS and Down’s syndrome. <br /> Emma played an active role in setting up Cork’s first aphasia-friendly café, as a member of the Clinical Therapies Society, and is involved in its ongoing success. She was involved in training the café staff members in affective communication with people with aphasia. Emma has a lot of experience with working as part of a team and was involved in the training of parents with regards to encouraging their child’s language development. She also was involved in the training of nurses in the care of adults with dysphagia. Emma has a particular interest the role that early years professionals can play in the identification of early communication impairments in children, and has carried out research demonstrating the need for collaboration between early years professionals and speech and language therapists. <br /> Emma is dedicated to building her own professional knowledge, through continued professional development. She is fully dysphagia trained and holds a certificate in Lámh Module 1. She has experience with the use of various AAC devices and in the use of the Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), both as a speech and language therapist and as a special needs assistant. Emma is a member of the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists and is a registered member of CORU. She is committed to providing individualised and client centred therapy to all of her clients and to ensuring that open communication and collaboration between therapist and client is upheld.
