Elaine Higgins
Elaine graduated from the National University, Galway with a first class BSc. Honours degree in Speech and Language Therapy in 2016 and was the recipient of the IASLT prize for academic achievement. Over the course of her training she has worked in acute hospitals, HSE primary care, ASD services, and Early Intervention. She has worked with a diverse range of clients including those with complex needs, Down’s Syndrome, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, ASD, Parkinson’s disease, post stroke, and traumatic brain injury. Elaine also holds certificates in Lámh module 1 and the Derbyshire Language Scheme.<br /> While an undergraduate student, Elaine was involved in designing and delivering the Communication Awareness Programme which aims to promote participation for people with communication impairments and was on the presenting team at the Enactus National Finals in 2015 and 2016 where NUIG was placed second. Her final year dissertation investigating the font preference of adults with intellectual disabilities has been well received at numerous conferences; Health Promotion and Research, Trinity Interdisciplinary Research and International Association of Logopedics & Phoniatrics conference. She hopes to publish her research in the near future.<br /> Elaine is committed to continuing her development, in particular in the area of dysphagia and is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Clinical Speech and Language Studies in Trinity College Dublin.<br /> Elaine is a graduate member of the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists and is currently on the committee for the Biennial IASLT conference which will be held in 2017. She is also a member of the Dysphagia Special Interest group.
