Edel O’Dea

Edel has been involved in speech and language therapy for almost four decades, completing her training at the Dublin College of Speech Therapy, which was the first training centre for Speech and Language Therapists in Ireland. When SLT later became a degree course, she was one of the first group of students to graduate with a B.A. Mod in Remedial Linguistics from Trinity College (1981). Edel has worked as a Senior SLT in a variety of settings including the National Children’s Hospital, a HSE Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, a specialist class for children with Developmental Language Disorder and HSE Community Clinics.<br /> In her role with ARC she works with children aged 3+, adolescents and young adults with speech and language delays and disorders, including developmental speech and language disorders, phonological disorders, articulation difficulties, verbal dyspraxia, and literacy difficulties. Edel’s particular areas of interest are dyslexia and fluency (stuttering and cluttering). She is trained in the “Wordsworth” dyslexia programme and can support parents and children who wish to use this online programme. She also regularly attends the Michael Palin Centre for treatment of stuttering in London, to keep abreast with current practice in stuttering therapy.<br /> Edel is registered with CORU (Government Health Regulatory Body regulating SLTs working in Ireland) and is a member of the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists (IASLT – voluntary association for SLTs in Ireland).
