Alex Carey
Alex Carey graduated with a BSc Hons in Speech and Language Therapy from University College Cork, and in August 2015 submitted her final dissertation for an MSc in Clinical Speech and Language Studies from Trinity College Dublin. She has gained clinical experience in a variety of settings including acute hospitals, H.S.E. community clinics, nursing homes, intellectual disability settings, outpatient rehabilitation units and school settings. She has worked with adults, adolescents and children with diverse communication and swallowing difficulties. These include speech and language disorders and delays, cognitive impairment, aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysarthria, social skills, and swallowing disorders. Populations she has worked with include individuals with intellectual disabilities, dementia, post stroke, and autistic spectrum disorders.<br /> Alex completed research relating to the assessment of speech sound disorders and on interventions to promote oral feeding in preterm infants. She will be presenting her research findings at the European Society for Swallowing Disorders in Barcelona, October 2015. Alex is particularly interested in eating, drinking and swallowing disorders and currently provides services to nursing homes in Dublin and the east of the country. Alex is a member of the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists. She is also a member of the Dysphagia Special Interest group and is committed to advancing her knowledge on the latest evidence available in this field.
